Gregor Schlierenzauer was born in Innsbruck, the capital of the Austrian District of Tyrol and currently lives in Fulpmes. He has an older sister, Gloria, and a younger brother, Lukas and comes from good stock with his uncle Markus Prock, a Winter Olympic medal winner in the men's luge event.

A student at the Skigymnasium in Stams, Gregor can combine his school studies with sport meaning tight schedules won't be a problem for the ambitious Austrian. As well as making a name for himself as a rising star of the ski flying world, the young Tyrolean also has his own fashion line and is a promising photographer.

'Schlieri' has an individual gold and a team gold from the 2008 Oberstdorf World Ski Flying Championship and two World Ski Championship team titles, as well as 32 World Cup wins. In 2008–9, he won the title.

He took his terrific form into the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, his first, where he took the bronze medal for both normal hill and large hill individual events, and then capped off a great Games with an Austrian team gold with Thomas Morgenstern, Wolfgang Loitzl and Andreas Kofler, who racked up an extraordinary 1107.9-point score for the top step of the medal rostrum.
