Portugal's participation in the WRC extends back as far as 1973. Perhaps its most notorious era came during the 1980s when a mixture of tricky road conditions and unruly, misbehaving fans led to a distinct level of infamy. In 2001 it found itself dropped altogether from the WRC calendar, the Rallye Deutschland gaining favour with organisers. In 2007 it returned with a bang, a new south coast base and the promise of a new beginning. 2008 saw a short break and the respite paid dividends with the 2009 rally being one of the highlights of the season. Not wanting to rest on their laurels 2010 bolsters a few tricky changes, the biggest possibly being the Santa Clara stage which will now be run in reverse. The new-look Rally Portugal also features a base in the Algarve Stadium which will play host to the Service Park and Super Special. The future certainly looks bright for the Portuguese Rally faithful.
