The eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland takes place at the German circuit of Sachsenring, located in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany. The tight circuit makes it one of the slowest on the calendar, but the close commotion makes it an all-action affair of brawling, elbows-out racing as riders jostle for every inch.
The first race at this historic old course was held on 26th May 1927, on an 8.7km layout, on public roads, which ran through the village of Hohenstein-Ernstthal itself. In 1971, West German Dieter Braun won the event and the East German fans sang along as the West German National Anthem was played in celebration of the champion, as is customary. Following this the event was limited to only East European entrants for political reasons.
In 1990, with technology dominating, faster machinery made it too dangerous to race through the village as there were some unfortunate fatalities. It was decided that the five mile course through such a densely populated area was no longer suitable and a new circuit was built in 1996, which lies 27km from the town of Chemnitz. Although mainly used as a driver training centre and road transport safety station, Sachsenring first hosted MotoGP in 1998 and many improvements have taken place since then, including a drastic layout enhancement in 2001.
