Seminal Blues-Punk-Duo The White Stripes announce they will go separate ways from now on.

While the Great Blizzard of 2011 is raging through the north-eastern US, another dramatic white out has been making news yesterday. The White Stripes, perhaps the most outstanding and quirkily charming pop group around the turn of the millennium, have broken up after 13 years of collaboration. In an announcement on their homepage, Jack and Meg White speak of the reasons for their decision:

“The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way. The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

The two-piece Detroit garage band, known for their three-colour-styling (black, white, red), leave us with a timeless legacy of six studio albums (The White Stripes, De Stijl, White Blood Cells, Elephant; Get Behind Me Satan and Icky Thump) and two highly-energetic and tensely atmospheric concert movies (Under Blackpool Lights and Under Great White Northern Lights), all of which can still be acquired via Third Man Records.

Thank You for the music!
