In the latest update in our ongoing series, we corner New York Red Bulls midfielder Matt Kassel and shoot him a few questions about life in the MLS and the Big Apple...
Name: Matt Kassel
Position: New York Red Bulls Midfielder
Birthplace: Bridgewater, New Jersey
D.O.B: October 30, 1989
When did your passion for soccer start?
I started playing soccer when I was about four years old, so at an early age. My father was involved when the Metrostars where still here, so that helped a lot, you can say soccer is in my family.
So no other sports had a chance anymore after starting with soccer?
No, not really. I mean of course I gave other sports a chance. I tried basketball, a little bit baseball but I had to make a decision and I chose soccer… and here am I.
So what does it mean for you now to be part of the New York Red Bulls?
Oh it's great, a dream come true for me. As you know I am local guy, so I came through the academy and every time I step on the field for my hometown is just an unbelievable feeling and experience. I am thankful… and, yes, a dream definitely came true.
You came through the academy, so when we are talking about soccer in the US how important is a good academy system for the development of the sport?
The academy is very, very important right now. When I became involved everything was not as popular or let’s say developed as it is now but now the whole academy is structured in a very professional way and this academy here at the New York Red Bulls is great. I mean this place is the best spot for a young player to be. I recommend every player if he has the chance to get involved at an academy he should use this opportunity because the only way to get better is that you have the competition around you and here you have the best coaches and everything you need to become a professional player.
So who has had the biggest influence on your career so far?
Well, definitely my father. I mean without a question it has to be my dad. He coached me from day one all the way up until the day I went to college. Of course I went to the academy, but without him I definitely wouldn’t be here.
Did you admire some special players when you where younger?
Yes, I always kind of looked at David Beckham and I mean it is so funny that I could play against him this season in the Play-Offs. I mean I am a young guy, he is a little bit older, so he was always one of those guys I looked at… and Zinedine Zidane as well.
Honestly, how was it for you to play against Beckham in the Red Bull Arena two weeks ago?
Oh it was crazy… just crazy… you know he is a legend in sports… it was fun.
What do you think is so special about New York City?
I mean it is the Big Apple... the city that never sleeps! I just love it. My biggest thing here is that the food is incredible. But I am a hometown guy so I have to support my city. There is nothing like it.
You said the food is so great... do you have a restaurant recommendation?
Yeah, I have to say back home. Right next to my hometown there's a restaurant called Alfonso’s. It's a great Italian restaurant with great food. I always go there.
When you look to the future, what are your personal goals?
You know I really hope that I am blessed with a long and successful career. I want to get into the national team and go from there to win titles. I just want to be the best player I can be.
