Todd Terje is known by record collectors as the man behind tasty edits of Chris Rea, Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones, and by party people as a dancefloor-rocking DJ. Here the two come together in one of his recent mixes from Horst Krzbrg in Berlin.
Is it house, is it funk, is it techno, or is it disco? The music crafted by Norwegian Todd Terje is full of infectious rhythms, deep dubby sounds, velvet-soft synths, cinematic moods and a wry playfulness. Ask him to describe his music as one thing or another and the resistance to being pigeonholed is obvious.
But this is a man who studies astrophysics when not on the decks and it's hard not to hear his tunes as space disco. But he does have many tricks up his sleeve: killer edits of Stevie and the Stones; cheeky remixes released on Swedish label GAMM and Munich-based Permanent Vacation (who also released his Remaster of the Universe epic); and, of course, his project with Dolle Jolle, called Shari Vari. Terje's touch is golden, his music magic.
Listen to this set recorded live at Berlin's Horst Krzbrg club.
