Chinashop Magazine editor Barbie Brady takes a close look at what’s gracing this autumn's catwalks and how it can be adapted to limited budgets.
With fashion becoming more diverse and complex than ever, there are still ways to stay current and update your look without a major impact to your wallet. Thankfully, certain modern staples are enjoying a long life span. Leggings and jeggings continue to be a great look as well as an investment. Women, it seems, are not too eager to give up a fashion element that is this versatile and comfortable. However, the top five must-haves for this autumn can joyfully add to your current wardrobe, making you feel flirty and in style.
1. Snakeskin
Whether you are a lover of prints or not, you can’t deny the appeal of a great snakeskin print. Jeans, shoes, dresses and even underwear are snake-patterned this season. Designer Chloe’s fall collection was fully inspired by the slippery slitherers.
2. Platform Shoes and Booties
Every designer hot right now is bringing it hard with the platform shoe. I’m a big fan of any platform by Michael Kors. The shape of his shoes fit in a way that makes my feet delighted while feeling sexy and tall like an Amazon at the same time. Whether you are into the wedge or the stiletto heel, it's up in inches for all! And Booties are booming. Everyone has a little something to snuggle your foot in to make you fierce.
3. Posh Nails in Multiple Shades of Wacky
With the invention of Minx (application gel nails) and a collection of fearless colours including but not limited to blues, turquoises, greens and yellows, nail colour has become as fashionable and trendy as ever. More and more women are discovering that they actually have 10 digits, and they all don’t have to fall in line. A little pattern on two of them, a bright blue on four, perhaps a mauve or a grey on the remainder. Think of it like an ice cream sundae, you can not only have whatever flavour you desire, but the more toppings the better.
4. Denim is Making a Comeback
Dig out that denim shirt, those denim boots, or that denim hat. Denim is back with a flair. Granted the help of fibre blends and the success of the jegging has a bit to do with it, but adding some quality pieces of this versatile fabric can always update and sustain your style. After all, denim is so durable it’ll outlive us all. A great resource for denim trends is denimology.
5. The Mini Maxi
Party in the front, business in the back. The maxi dress has taken a new shape and it's super short in the front. A daring and not-for-everyone look I assure you, but you’ll be seeing it more and more. These dresses tend to be fluttery and light. The new shape give the maxi a sexiness and a playfulness that the full-frontal maxi did not.
Unfortunately, feathers are on the way out. Although I personally love them, you’ll be seeing less and less of our flighty friends. Those bulky, unflattering fur vests are still in stores, but seriously, not even supermodels look right in these. However, it's here for at least another season.
And one last thing, find a friend, grab a wad of cash and hit the shops tonight. It’s Fashion’s Night Out ladies and gentlemen. And most shops are having delightfully fun activities, live DJs, champagne shopping extravaganzas. Let us know where you go and what you see on the trend horizon that you’re excited about.
