Ryan Sheckler’s hopes of retaining his Skateboard Street title came to an abrupt end at X Games XV as he was forced to withdraw from Saturday’s competition through injury.

Sheckler had been widely tipped to do the business, but it was left to rival Paul Rodriguez Jr to take the gold after Sheckler had turned over his ankle skating down a set of stairs in the third heat. He was escorted from the course for medical attention, clutching his right foot and simply saying, “It’s broken.”

Rodriguez claimed top honours after executing a perfect switch heelflip, and the 24-year-old admitted, after finishing second last year to Sheckler in the competition, that “it’s been a huge itch and it finally got scratched."

And Rodriguez added: “It’s been, like, four years since I won the last one, so it’s good to know I can still hang with these youngsters.”
