Red Bull athlete Ronnie Renner won the gold medal in Moto X Step-Up at X Games 15 in Los Angeles.
The win came as a bit of a shock to Ronnie, who was using a 250 KTM as opposed to a more powerful 450, due to the fact he was more comfortable with the smaller bike, which he used for Red Bull High Rise. This is Ronnie's second X Games gold in Step-Up, going along with his hardware from 2007. Renner, know for his big whips, compensated for the lack of power with his whip technique, willing his orange bike over the bar time and again as other competitors failed. The height got up to 34 feet and it was down to Ronnie and defending Step-Up winner Ricky Carmichael. Ronnie failed to clear 35 feet, and after Carmichael took a spill on his attempt, both riders were declared winners.
In other moto action, James Stewart made his long-awaited X Games debut in the Best Whip contest. This was judged by fan text votes. This was James' first time competing on a metal freestyle ramp, but more than held his own, getting the second-most amount of votes, 21%, out of the six riders. Only gold is given, so James has to wait until Saturday to get another shot at a medal, as he competes in Supercross and Supermoto.
