Kilian Fischhuber had good memories from last year’s climbing World Cup at Eindhoven, as this was the place where he outclimbed Rustam Gelmanov at the end of the season to take his fourth overall title…
Fischhuber has so far been dominating the season, starting off with two consecutive victories and two further podiums. As he has been the world ranking leader for years, expectations of him are always high at the World Cup.
But one crucial thing was different this time, namely that since the World Cup event in Moscow, Russia, the Austrian has been suffering from pain in his finger, preventing him from training in the week leading up to the latest World Cup meeting in the Netherlands.
Kilian even thought about skipping the event, but following his doctor’s diagnosis he took the chance and flew to Eindhoven, where he climbed his way through the qualification and the semi-finals, even though his finger interrupted his flow. After the first three boulders in the finals, Kilian was in fifth place, and Adam Ondra (CZE), his closest rival for the overall title, was in front of him. But then Kilian showed his 'killer instinct' and excelled in the final climb to take third place in front of Ondra. This meant that Kilian had made the podium for all five World Cup events so far and expanded his overall tally to 395 points.
Eindhoven was also a good ground for Rustam Gelmanov (sixth), and Natalija Gros and Jenny Lavarda made it to the women's finals, finshing fifth and sixth respectively.
