The new season of World Cup climbing began like the last one ended – with Austrian Kilian Fischhuber on top!

The first event in the seven-stage Bouldering World Cup was won by Fischhuber after he overcame Czech athlete Adam Ondra in a keenly-contested final in Greifensee, Switzerland.

Four-time winner Fischhuber led the field of 81 climbers from the qualification stage to the semi-finals, before a final showdown with Ondra.

The rivals climbed the first three boulders but Adam was up first on the platform and climbed the next obstacle, meaning that Kilian would need to do the same to take the win.

The champion showed once again that he can stand up to the pressure at crucial moments and flashed the boulder for the victory.

“I knew that I was in good shape, but starting the season with a win is a sensational feeling. Now I’m looking forward even more to the World Cup in Vienna in two weeks,” said Fischhuber.

Rustam Gelmanov started well in the competition, tying Kilian and Adam for the lead after the qualification round but the Russian came unstuck in the semi-finals and eventually had to settle for 18th place.
