Toronto’s Frank Dukes has won the chance to record in the prestigious Red Bull Studio in Los Angeles with an A-list emcee after showing that he is the hip hop daddy in the 2009 Red Bull Big Tune Finals in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dukes, runner-up 12 months go, began the night as one of 16 producers representing eight cities from across the US, battling it out in a head-to-head competition.
The national final came down to a duel between Dukes and the man behind the mask representing The Big Easy, Hannibal the Beat Animal.
And it was Dukes’ low end bass which won over the 1000-strong audience packed into the main lounge and balcony boxes of Opera in Midtown.
The 2009 winner can now look forward to working with some of the biggest names in hip hop - previous winners have chosen to record with the likes of Common, The Game, Ludacris, Lupe Fiasco and Talib Kweli.
And he said: “It would be really cool to chop it up with guys on that level. In my session, I’ll try to push forward and hopefully it will stand the test of time. That’s my goal.”
Red Bull Big Tune is designed to inspire and educate the next generation of music producers. It provides the opportunity to gain insight of the industry as well as professional production knowledge.
