5-pointz Nika Kramer/Red Bull Photofiles

Kid Glyde may be a BC One rookie but the B-Boy from Queens comes from a proud and longstanding hip-hop-dynasty.

You met Lilou yesterday and showed him around 5pointz. What was that like?
I respect Lilou a lot. And it was an honour to show him one of our influential marks. Some people take it for granted but I never do because whenever we take pictures of ourselves we always go to 5pointz. So it felt good to show it somebody else in the game that I respect.

Your family has an interesting story concerning the history of hip-hop. Can you tell me a bit about that?
My dad’s crew, The Dynamic Rockers, were very influential. There was this famous battle in Lincoln Center on August 15, 1981. And they battled Rock Steady. It was the first battle televised, it was major. Like the best of the best fighting each other. And since my father left the scene, Dynamic Rockers died out in a way. And my job is to bring it back as I lead the crew now. My dad and a lot of other people are very proud that we brought it back. And now I’m representing in BC One, so I guess we’re doing a good job!

Remember your first B-Boy steps?
When I was growing up, my dad was still a B-Boy but he did it for work. My parents divorced when I was four but he started teaching me when I was 12. It felt good cause he gave me something. He was there from the beginning of hip-hop culture. Back then I didn’t even know that my father had such an impact in the world.

How did you get your name? From your father?
Right. His name was Glyde. And one of his former crew members was Kid Freeze. Those are my two inspirations and they were the ones who taught me. Later I found out in a Martha Cooper book that they also called my father Kid Glyde and I was like, dad, your name was Kid Glyde too? And he said, yeah, I was a kid too back then. Till that moment I thought I was the first Kid Glyde. But anyway, I thought I don’t wanna be Baby Glyde or Lil Glyde, I thought that sounded corny.

Do you feel pressure as your family and friends will probably be in the audience?
Yeah. But my family isn’t really good at coming to my battles. There was one time I went to a battle in Miami and invited my whole family as I have a lot of family there. And they all came and it was crazy because I felt a lot of pressure like, damn, I can’t do whack. But they were turning me on whenever they called my crew up and it worked out. Actually I do very good under pressure, that kind of pressure gives me the energy to break through the walls. Anything in my way goes like: Crshhhhh!
